about

Lockstep is really our 21st Century anthem against oppression - so many reasons why this song works well for BABAL! It's fundamentally about light & dark, good and evil, but also about the inability to stand up and be authentic when everything around you works to ensure your conformity.
"I think conformity is a sort of boredom that desires order that can ultimately lead to violence/darkness if it's not channelled or has a chance to morph into something useful or rewarding for the individual - the individual is lost in the Lockstep of routine.
Marching men in the Ukraine seemed to be a huge wedge of darkness stepping on hopes and dreams of many people who wanted change, so the words evolved from a mix of all these ideas". says Karen.
The driving guitars and military beats are the force under the menacing vocal and there is a manic edge as the final chorus parodies the serious business of marching to war.
"Making the film for Lockstep was great fun! We dressed and did make-up before walking to the nearby railway station and basically filmed on location with no permission - both day and nightime shoots (thanks to Tom Lee-Rutter, vigilante film-maker, Carnie Films). We got away with it! - that was partly the challenge; to be out of step and make this music film in a place of order and rules & regulations, like kids taking their party out onto the street and seeing how far they can go without being told off.... The business men in the film are the marching men and the surreal characters that abound are the playful or damaged sides of the self that often get marched over. Enjoy the fun!"

One speaks and a thousand misunderstand
where millions are silent and a thunderous applause erupts
where chatter overwhelms humility and gossip destroys worlds
the tongues wag, the ears flap and the mind creates a wall
everything has been said but no one has understood
talking with conviction and concluding that knowledge is easy and effects a multitude of expanding smokescreens around truth
